DNR Implements Stevens County Target Shooting Restrictions Due to Dry Conditions

The temporary Stevens County closures will take effect starting Saturday, June 12

OLYMPIA – Due to dry conditions, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), working in conjunction with Stevens County, is temporarily closing two parcels of state land to target shooting, effective Saturday, June 12.

Closure of the areas known locally as “Boggs Pit” near Deer Park and “Stonelodge” or “Mile Marker 19” near Suncrest will be closed due to increasing fire activity in these areas of Stevens County.

DNR will open these parcels to target shooting once conditions allow.

The use of incendiary devices, such as exploding targets, sky lanterns, or tracer ammunition, is illegal on all DNR-protected lands. Violators of the shooting closure could be subject to fines.

Led by the Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, DNR manages nearly 1,300 miles of trails and 160-plus recreation sites in 3 million acres of working forest state trust lands and 92 natural areas. DNR trust lands keep forests development-free, provide clean water, and generate revenue for public services and school construction.
